SSB Lecturette series: Religion and Politics should not be mixed

Many times we all heard that religious and Politics should not be mixed and kept separate which is a common feeling in India of educated group. Usually People are afraid that if Politicians subscribe to a particular religion, they will suppress follower of other religion. There have been examples of such kind of atrocities in the past where clash had been taken place between politics and religion... This is understood to be the chief cause of fear in the minds of people who support keeping religion & Politics apart.

Is it the definite Principle?  I think not so?? The purpose of Politics is to do welfare to people. Every Politicians who do contest election promises to do welfare whatever it may be. The purpose of religion called Dharma (ethics, morality, & religious duty), is not different from politics. The Politics is called Rajiniti, the code of conduct followed by ruler or ruling class. Rajiniti is always a part of Dharma Shastra such as Mannu smriti, yajna vakya-smriti.

Dharma shastra are the books written by sages of India which delineate the duties of citizens according to their various class as educators, rulers etc. No description of Dharma shastra is complete without laying down stress on principle off rulers.

Dharm is meant to give ultimate welfare to society & Politics is but a part of it. The rulers of India, the kings were followers of Dharma. In their student life they were trained in Dharma. Therefore traditionally in India Dharma was not separated from politics. Politicians are not trained in Dharma this is one of the major reasons that there is so much corruption in politics without Dharma (ethics, morality, &religious duty) is bound to breed corruption sooner or later because of human afflictions like selfishness, greed & other impurities.

Therefore a religious person who is righteous & loving will definitely care for the welfare of the whole population and hence become a true politician. Today both religion and politics need a change and politicians need to be trained in basic principles of Dharma. If leaders and righteous & spiritual the whole society will flourish.
