Prime Minister
Narendra Modi is the first Indian PM to visit the Gulf nation in 34
years. The last Indian Prime Minister to visit the UAE was Indira Gandhi
in 1981.Wrapping up his two-day visit to the strategically-important UAE, he
held talks with the country's top leadership and addressed the Indian diaspora.
Addressing the diaspora at the Dubai Cricket Ground in his last engagement, PM Modi even spoke a few lines in Malayalam to send the crowd ecstatic.
Economics Ties:
PM Narendra
Modi gave a rousing speech to tens of thousands of Indian expatriates in Dubai,
telling them leaders in the United Arab Emirates have promised to invest $75 billion in India. The money would be
distributed through the establishment of the UAE-India Infrastructure
Investment Fund, which will support the building of railways, ports, roads,
airports and industrial corridors, according to a joint statement released by
the crown prince and Modi.
India &
UAE also agreed to boost trade by 60 per cent over the next five years. India
is the UAE's second-largest trading
partner and the UAE is India's third largest, behind the US and China,
according to the Indian Embassy. Trade between India and the UAE reached
$60 billion last year
Defence Ties:
India &
UAE agreed to strengthen defence cooperation through regular exercises and training,
and manufacturing defence equipment in India. Both countries have been in
conflict with Islamist militants, and the statement undertook to increase
cooperation in counter-terrorism operations and intelligence sharing. PM
Modi said India had repeatedly fallen victim to acts of terrorism and it was
time global powers unite to tackle the issue.
'The UAE also said
that they will support India in our bid for a permanent seat for the UN
Security Council,' PM Narendra said

Prime Minister Narendra Modi toured
Masdar in Abu Dhabi, a zero carbon smart city, on Monday, taking a ride in a
self-driving car that runs on batteries powered by solar energy.
Modi discussed urban development and
next generation urban spaces with UAE officials at Masdar, billed as the
world's first zero-carbon, car-free city, and was briefed on its PRT or Private
Rapid Transport System.
He went to the
labour camp. It was his reaching out initiative to the labourers who now feel
confident that they will be looked after better in the region after this visit.
PM Narendra Modi noted that Indian mission in UAE has set up an e-migrant
portal to help Indian migrant workers and an online platform 'MADAD' to assist the diaspora.
Moreover, UAE
government agreed to allot land for a Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi, which PM Modi
called 'a great step.' There is already one Hindu temple in nearby Dubai.
A joint
statement by the two governments said the UAE would help India develop strategic petroleum reserves in
addition to its upstream and downstream petroleum sectors.
Moreover, Indian
expats in trouble can now get financial help, including for fighting legal
cases, under a new scheme announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of
various measures for the welfare of diaspora.
Overall, it
was a successful visit strengthening our ties in the middle-east in terms of
Economic, Defence and Political front.
