Importance of OIR in Screening round of SSB

Screening round that is conducted at Day 1 of SSB is the gateway for the aspirants to their dream world as after this recommendation only they move ahead and are allowed to stay in the SSB center for 4 more days. Screening round has the highest rate of rejection as compared to the other exams of the same level, but its the easiest known process where one need to just reveal the officer potential with average aptitude and they are recommended for further rounds.

Screening at SSB is divided in the following rounds:
  • OIR - Officers Intelligence Rating
  • PPDT - Picture perception and Discussion

These rounds are conducted post document verification and filling of some essential forms required at the initial level. The screening round needs just a basic level of aptitude to be solved by the aspirants and reveal the officer potential through story making and then doing narration and GD. The detailed description for these rounds is as follows:

1) OIR - This is a basic aptitude round which is conducted in two phases. Two different booklets are given having 40 questions which needs to be solved by the aspirants at a desired time given by the assessors there. These question are from diverse fields like aptitude, English, verbal, non verbal, logical, quant, data interpretation, etc. One need to practice them so that a good performance in this round can be made.

2) PPDT - Here a blurred image is shown to the aspirants and they need to mark the reflection of the image in a box, along with the action they see in the story. Also a story needs to be written based out of perception for the image. A good story is desired here which can be easily made after doing proper self introspection. after this individual narration and GD is scheduled where the performance can ensure selection.  the details of how to perform well in these rounds will be covered separately in the blog in other articles.

Let us now see the importance of OIR as it has come to my notice that the aspirants don't give importance to it while doing preparation. Though this paper is not under qualifying category as the marks one achieve here is not added while preparing the merit but still the grades allotted in OIR has a high impact in getting screened in and also plays vital role in psychology and PI, hence one needs to give their best. Here are some success mantra for doing well :
  • Understand the paper pattern - Understanding the syllabus for the OIR and preparing accordingly will help the aspirants to get success easily. The level of questions asked here is that on tenth level and the questions just need clarity of basics and nothing else, so practicing at home as per the syllabus will definitely help.
  • Focus on what you know - There is no need to attempt all with marking of wrong answers. As I said that you need not do everything correct but the answers that you mark should be majorly coorect so that you achieve good grades here which later creates a good impression in front of psychologist and the interviewer.Do what you know and its really good if you know all, but since time is limited focus should be in attempting all what is under your control. Your knowledge should be balanced with proper time management and that would only happen if practice has been done in right direction.
  • Never have fear of reasoning - I have seen aspirants having fear of aptitude and reasoning, and specially the non math side students. Please remember that its not a math exam where one need to apply tough formulas or learn things for getting answers. The questions are really easy and can be done by the kids who are appearing in tenth class. This can help in understanding the level of these questions. Fear factor also reduces confidence and this is nowhere the attribute of our officers.
