SSB Lecturette series: The deepening disconnect between INDIA and USA

Recently there was a news that India and USA both the countries will have 2+2 dialogue with each other. In this meeting the US secretary of state Mike Pompeo and Defense secretary will host external affair minister and defense minister. but due to unavoidable reasons the meeting was postponed.

The agenda of the meeting was to enhance the strategic coordination between both the countries and maintain peace and stability in indo pacific region. It puts strategic defense and security relationship between both the countries. The main reason for the meeting to postpone was the India’s relationship between Iran china and Russia. In 2017 US passed CATSA( Countering America adversaries through sanctions) this act empowers the American president to put sanctions on any nations which was violating the rules of NPT and also posing as threat for the peace of world it also empowers to put the entities into the grey list doing business with the banned countries.As.PM  modi  advocating for the better economy autonomy this act was unacceptable to India .

Because India has its own needs and interest.  On bilateral trade both countries are firing on each other .Mr Trump raises the issue of import duty on Harley bikes and also on strategic relationship two government has failed to make progress on signing foundation agreement which in turns helps India to take the technology  transfer etc.

Unfortunately US south Asia policy unfortunately appears to be in trouble. In the starting of the year India was the mainly for restoring peace in Afghanistan. Mr Trump in his tweet advocated for stopping the aid to Pakistan .He also proposed the idea to grey list Pakistan for funding terror groups he also asked Pakistan to stop terror groups using its soil for terror attacks. but recently  the situation is changing .Last month Pakistan PM Shahid abbassi visited US and held meeting with US Vice president Mike pence .After that Afghanistan PM and Pakistan PM Abbasi issued seven point agenda for the peace in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

US has done drone attacks in Afghanistan and Pakistan but the no of attacks in Afghanistan is 100 in 2017 and 40 till now in 2018 but in Pakistan it was 5 in  2017 and 1 in 2018 .US with the help of Pakistan killed the Taliban most dreaded leader Mullah Fazllulah and cracked the deal for ramzan ceasefire between Afghanistan and Taliban

Although US has asked to take tough stand against the terror groups but the LeT chief Hafiz saeed is planning to enter parliamentary elections in Pakistan. Jem chief Masood Azhar giving threats to India.

But as there is change in the US policy but India has its own interest and needs. Trump Iran policy which has imposed new sanctions against all countries and companies doing business in Iran and imposed November 4 deadline to reduce oil import to zero from Iran and also US raised objections for India deal with Russia For S400 missile system .Regardless of India’s determination to go ahead with its dealings with Iran the impact of American restrictions will be felt in chabhar port ,once called India gateway to Afghanistan. During the previous US regime India was able to complete railway through zahedan to Afghanistan and also waiver for its port project.

But it will be interesting to see because this time India and US dialogue is not as robust as before while India planned engagement with Russia Iran China in the next few month may render the ties yet more difficult.
