SALUTES COURAGE OF SOLDIERS ON ARMY DAY

On the occasion of Army Day, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday saluted the courage and
invaluable service of the soldiers and officers, including the veterans.

Modi said the Army always leads from the front,
be it in protecting the sovereignty of the nation or helping citizens during
natural disasters.

On this day in 1949, Lieutenant General K M
Cariappa had taken over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of Army from
General Sir Francis Butcher.

PROJECTS ONLY IF THEY HAVE WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN: NGT

The National Green Tribunal has ruled that
any development project, which is bound to generate waste and sewage, should
not be granted clearance unless its plan provides for proper collection,
processing and disposal of sewage and garbage.
·
"It needs no
wonders to understand that any development, residential, industrial or
commercial is bound to generate municipal waste and sewage. Thus, when plans
are made for such development, authorities including ministries and others are
statutorily required to ensure that proper processing facilities for dealing
with the municipal solid waste as well as for treating sewage are
available," a bench headed by NGT Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar said.
JAPAN ABORTS MINI-ROCKET MISSION SHORTLY
AFTER LIFT-OFF

Japan's space
agency today aborted a mission to use a mini-rocket to send a satellite into
orbit after the spacecraft stopped sending data to ground control shortly after
liftoff.
·
The SS-520
rocket, which stands around the size of a power pole, lifted off at 8:33 am
into a clear sky at the Uchinoura Space Centre in southern Kagoshima
Prefecture.
·
The rocket,
regarded as one of the smallest units in the world capable of sending
satellites into the space, was carrying the three-kilogramme (6.6 pound)
"TRICOM-1" observation satellite.
·
But officials
aborted the mission within minutes of takeoff after the space agency stopped
receiving data from the rocket after the launch.

China and Vietnam
pledged on Saturday to manage their differences and safeguard peace in the
South China Sea, in a joint communique issued during a visit to China by
Vietnamese Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong.

After
"candid" discussions, the two countries agreed to "manage well
their maritime difference, avoid actions that complicate the situation and
escalate tensions, and safeguard the peace and stability of the South China
Sea", said the communique published in full by China's state news agency Xinhua
·
China claims almost all of the South
China Sea, where about $5 trillion worth of sea-borne trade passes every year. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan, in addition to Vietnam, also have claims in the sea,
believed to have rich deposits of oil and gas.

China has handed over two ships to the Pakistan Navy to
safeguard the strategic Gwadar port and trade routes under the $ 46 billion
China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a move likely to raise alarm in India.

China handed over the two ships to the Pakistan Navy on
Saturday for joint security along the sea route of the China-Pakistan Economic
Corridor (CPEC), Dawn News reported.
·
The Gwadar port in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan
province has been developed under CPEC linking western China through Pakistan
with the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Former India
all-rounder Kapil Dev will be conferred as the new legend of the famous Legends
Club here on Tuesday. Established by former BCCI president Raj Singh Dungarpur
in Mumbai in 2003, the Legends Club honours famous Indian cricketers like Vijay
Merchant, Vinoo Mankad, Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar on their respective
birthdays at Cricket Club of India’s C.K.Nayudu Hall.

Kapil Dev was on 6th January and since he was not available on that day we
chose to confer him on this Tuesday”, Rajan Jayakar, the honorary secretary of

Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin slammed Returning
Officer K. Rajeev Reddy after his presidential nomination for Tuesday’s
elections to the Hyderabad Cricket Association was rejected on Saturday.

Of the eight members in fray, Azhar was the only one
‘rejected’ while three were disqualified for cooling off period (for holding
posts on the previous body), three barred on the nine cumulative years in
office rule while two were cleared, according to the list put up at the HCA
offices.
