PROTESTORS DEFY SUPREME COURT BAN ON JALLIKATTU, TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN MADURAI
·         Several supporters of Jallikattu were baton-charged and taken into preventive custody on Saturday near here for allegedly trying to defy a ban on the traditional bull taming sport associated with Pongal festivities.
·         Anticipating trouble, police in large number was deployed in sensitive areas where the sport is generally held like Avaniapuram, Palamedu and Alanganallur, locations famous for Jallikattu in Madurai district.
·         Police baton-charged people protesting against the ban on Jallikattu in Avaniapuram on Saturday. Thirty people have been detained.

TATA SONS APPOINTS INSIDER NATARAJAN CHANDRASEKARAN AS NEW CHAIRMAN

·         India's $100 billion salt-to-software Tata conglomerate named veteran insider Natarajan Chandrasekaran as the new chairman of its holding company on Thursday, looking to soothe investors after a bruising public spat over the ouster of his predecessor.
·         Chandrasekaran, 53, currently chief executive of IT outsourcing giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's most-valuable company with a market capitalisation of $67 billion, will take over as Tata Sons executive chairman on Feb. 21, according to a company statement.

RBI EMPLOYEES WRITE TO URJIT PATEL PROTESTING AGAINST 'MISMANAGEMENT' IN DEMONETISATION
·         Feeling "humiliated" by events since demonetisation, RBI employees on Friday wrote to Governor Urjit Patel protesting against operational "mismanagement" in the exercise and Government impinging its autonomy by appointing an official for currency coordination.
·         In a letter, they said autonomy and image of RBI has been "dented beyond repair" due to mismanagement and termed appointment of a senior Finance Ministry official as a "blatant encroachment" of its exclusive turf of currency management.

THAI FIGHTER JET CRASHES AT AIR SHOW; PILOT KILLED

·         A Thai air force pilot has died when his fighter jet crashed at an air show during the country's Children's Day. 
·         Amateur video footage shows the JAS 39 Gripen jet maneuvering over the Hat Yai air base in southern Thailand when it suddenly lost altitude and crashed in a ball of fire away from spectators.
·         The Ministry of Defense is investigating the cause of the crash today. 

INDIA, US HOLD EXTENSIVE TALKS TO PROTECT OCEAN ECOSYSTEMS

·         India and the US have held extensive talks here to protect ocean ecosystems and promote sustainable development through the 'blue economy', one of the largest bilateral diplomatic engagements in the world specifically focused on oceans.

·         The first-ever US-India Ocean Dialogue Preparatory Meeting is part of a decision made during the first US-India Strategic and Commercial Dialogue in 2015 to protect ocean ecosystems and promote sustainable development through the 'blue economy', a release said.

OUR MOON WAS FORMED 4.51 BN YEARS AGO: SCIENTISTS

·         The moon is at least 4.51 billion years old -- or 40-140 million years older than previously The moon's age has been a hotly debated topic, even though scientists have tried to settle the question over many years and using a wide range of scientific techniques.
"We have finally pinned down thought, says new research based on an analysis of minerals from the moon called zircons.
These minerals were brought back to Earth by the Apollo 14 mission in 1971 and have now been studied by researchers from 
University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA).

ISRAEL FIRED ROCKETS AT A MAJOR MILITARY AIRBASE NEAR DAMASCUS: SYRIAN ARMY 

·         Syrian army command said on Friday that Israel fired rockets at a major military airbase outside Damascus, and warned Tel Aviv of repercussions of what it called a "flagrant" attack. The explosions were heard in the capital, and residents in the southwest suburbs saw a large plume of smoke rising from the area, while video footage downloaded on social media showed flames leaping from parts of Mezzah military airport's compound.

 

US VICE PRESIDENT SINGLES OUT PAKISTAN FOR MAKING 'COUNTERPRODUCTIVE' MOVES RISKING NUCLEAR WAR

·         US Vice President Joe Biden has singled out Pakistan along with Russia and North Korea and others for making "counterproductive" moves that only increased the risk that nuclear weapons could be used in a regional conflict. "Not just North Korea, but Russia, Pakistan, and others have made counterproductive moves that only increase the risk that nuclear weapons could be used in a regional conflict in Europe, South Asia, or East Asia," Biden said in his remarks on nuclear security.

 

CHINA LIFTERS FACE ONE-YEAR BAN

·         China faces a one-year ban from international weightlifting competitions after three of its athletes were stripped of their 2008 Olympic gold medals on Thursday following re-tests of samples from the Beijing Games.
·         The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it had disqualified weightlifting gold medallists Cao Lei (75kg), Chen Xiexia (48 kg) and Liu Chunhong(69kg) from the Beijing Games after they tested positive for prohibited substances.

CLEANSED INDIAN OLYMPIC ASSOCIATION CLEARED

·         The Sports Ministry on Friday lifted the suspension of recognition accorded to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) after the national sports body revoked its earlier decision to appoint former chiefs Abhay Singh Chautala and Suresh Kalmadi as honorary life presidents.
·         The IOA's Annual General Meeting on December 27 last year had reportedly passed a resolution to honour the controversial duo with the post of honorary life president. The move invited severe criticism from various quarters with the government issuing show-cause notice before suspending the deemed recognition of the national Olympic body.
