Indian Army: The Parachute Regiment and the Special Forces - Part 2

In part 1 of this series we saw description about the Paras and other special forces, their need and why they were brought up. In this part we will see what magic these forces can do and how Success is always theirs.

History of Para commandos

During the 1965 war with Pakistan, Lt Col Megh Singh formed a commando unit, from volunteers all across the Infantry Units. The commando unit performed well and with the government’s clearance a commando unit was to be established in the Army. However to be trained first in parachute training the unit was moved to Parachute Regiment, and formed the 9th Battalion. The unit was later divided into 9th and 10th Commando units.

The Para Commandos are designed for special tasks and special missions. Some of the highly sensitive missions accomplished by them are as follows:

1971 Indo Pakistan War

During the Indo Pakistan war of 1971, 6 Para Commandos were dropped 240 km behind Pakistani Border. These Para Commandos not only carried out mobility raids, destroyed 6 artillery guns but also killed 437 Pakistani soldiers and wounded another 114 showing a glimpse of what the Special Forces were capable of doing.

Operation Blue Star

8 members of the 1stPara SF successfully accomplished the mission to free the Golden Temple from hold of Militants even after the intelligence about the number of militants was inaccurate.

Kargil War

To ensure victory in the Kargil war, the Indian army approximately deployed 2 Airborne Battalions and 1 Para (SF) Battalions.

The Indian Para Commandos are trained to carry out Intelligence missions and counter insurgency missions; apart from this they are highly trained to carry out covert operations and hostage rescue both from within and outside the Indian Territory.

In my opinion all defense aspirants who are trying for the Indian Army, must take their inspiration from the airborne forces. No doubt, it’s frustrating and difficult when you face rejection again and again , when you have tried your best and miss it by an inch. Whenever you feel low and feel as if you have been defeated, remember that great things come in life after struggle.
SSB Vision

While running a route march its not the physical strength which gives a person power to run 60 – 70 kilometers at a stretch, but it’s the never say die attitude which keeps him going. Its that desire for that maroon beret , the special forces tag on the shoulders which pushes him ahead and empowers him to break all the mental blockades, its that mindset which makes him see that he has already accomplished it. Gentlemen, to achieve greatness and win this battle, we need to have that mindset, that ‘why’ in our life. Why are we doing this? Who are we doing this for?

If you’ll work each day as if your life depends on it, when you’ll leave no stone unturned, when no matter how tempting the distractions may appear you remain dedicated to your goal, when you’ll be so determined to achieve your goal that you don’t need an external factor to motivate you, then and only then opportunities will start happening and doors will start opening.

Keep working hard, there are no alternate paths to your destination, no matter how hard your circumstances get, do not give up. Be iron willed!

Success and Glory will follow!
