All you need to know about Indian Air Force - Part2

In Part 1 of this series we saw the history of Indian Air force and the structure that is being followed in this force. Lets take the discussion ahead and see whats more in our Indian Air force. Currently the Chief of the Air Staff is Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha who is a four star officer. The only officer who has been given the honorary five stars is Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh.

Branches of IAF
The IAF is divided into several branches to carry out the various day to day operations. The branches are as follows:
  •     Flying Branch
  •     Technical Branch
  •     Ground Duty Branch
Flying Branch – The Flying branch deals with flying the fighter aircrafts and helicopters and is used to assist the Indian Army during wartime operations. It also carries out the task of providing supplies to troops which are stationed at high altitudes.

Technical Branch – The Technical Branch is divided into two sub categories. The first category comprises of Aeronautical Engineers in Mechanical AE(M) which deal with keeping the aircraft combat ready. The second category is Aeronautical Engineers in Electronics AE(E).  This sub category deals with creating radar links with the fighter aircraft in air and vice versa. They are also responsible for handling the defense radar, operating sophisticated computers to keep things running during operations and practice.

Ground Duty Branch – The ground branch is divided into the following categories:
  •     Administrative Branch
The Officers of the administrative branch are responsible for carrying out efficient management of both human and material resources. Some of the Offices are also assigned with the following:
       a)   Air Traffic Controller
Air Traffic controller officer will see the orderly flow of air traffic, airspace management and provide advisory services for orderly flow of military and civilian aircraft
        b) Fighter Controller
Officers in the fighter controller branch are responsible for close contact between the aircraft’s pilot and the air defense radar system. They alert the pilot against the enemy’s threat using electronic offensive equipment.

  •     Accounts Branch
As officer in the Accounts Branch is responsible for maintaining the flow of money, where the money is being utilized, plans the budgetary requirements. He mainly deals with the financial matters of the IAF, and also handles the disbursement of pay and allowances to the IAF personnel.
  •      Logistics Branch
A Logistic officer basically deals with providing the IAF personnel with aircraft clothing, he deals with providing the personnel with fighter aircraft’s spare parts, rations, mechanical transport, armament, missiles and makes the day to day working out of the organization easier.
  •      Education Branch
The teaching staff of the IAF comprises of the Education Branch
  •     Meteorology Branch
The meteorology branch deals with handling the latest satellite imagery which enables IAF operators to be aware of weather at all time.
With time to time the Indian Air Force had proved its mettle, not lacking behind the Indian Army and Indian Navy, the Indian Air force too has its own Special Forces unit known as the Garud Commandos. The Commando unit undergoes a training of 72 weeks the longest Special Force unit training period in Indian Armed Forces, thus making the IAF even more deadly.
