SSB Lecturette Series: The Indo-Bangladesh Land Boundary Agreement

The Prime Minister sincerely thanked the Opposition for their cooperation and support and brought to light a new bill, a new hope for the people of Both Bangladesh and India.

To understand the importance of this bill we first need to understand what enclaves are?

The bill aims at focusing on the enclaves which are present in either country. Today India possesses 106 enclaves of Bangladesh while Bangladesh possesses 92 of India’s. Thus both countries have land in each other.

An enclave is any portion of state that is totally surrounded by territory of another state. In India the enclaves are present in the states of Assam, West Bengal, Tripura and Meghalaya. Some of them are even counter- enclaves meaning to say enclaves within enclaves. The result of these enclaves is that people residing in these enclaves lead a miserable life. This is because the Indian enclaves are resided within Bangladesh while the Bangladesh ones reside inside India. The result of which is that people residing in these enclaves are treated as stateless. They are deprived of their basic laws and rights as the surrounding region is of another country. With the Land Boundary Agreement on wheels this problem would be catered. The land, which comprises of enclaves within the two countries, would be swapped.

The passing of the bill is a mere legal formality as the land is already possessed by the countries. However this would ease up things for both the nations. As for India this would serve as a major factor in improving the image of the country as a neighbor. The relations between the two countries would be improved and as a result the insurgencies happening in the North East regions of India would be reduced.

The insurgencies happening in the North East states take hundreds of death each year. With this bill in motion, the armed forces would have a better control over the region and would prevent such mis-happenings from happening. The Initiative taken by the Prime Minister and the UPA Government to get this passed is a commendable job in itself and would push our friendship with Bangladesh to new levels. This would definitely improve the picture of India on the globe and this act would be definitely appreciated by the developed economies. There has been a contrast among the youth, on the way the new government is working but this act is appreciated by all. Even the opposition is geared to talk about this act and is appreciating.
