SSB Experience Series: Recommended from AFSB Dehradun in first attempt - Part2

In the First part of this series we saw the starting of an interesting journey of my life and how the screening process happened. Also how the interviewer grilled me with different set of questions and the details of the psych round. Lets move ahead to see the rest part of the story.

DAY 4
Day 4 began early as we had GT on that day. All dressed up in white.
It began with Group Discussion. In the first discussion we were given two topics and we had to choose one of them and in the second GTO gave us the topic and we had to discuss on that only.
Our first topic was “How can draughts and floods can be managed in India” and we were given a few hints/clues based on which we had to discuss.

The discussion went well as we had already decided that we will give chance to everybody.
The second topic was “How can internal security be improved in India”.
In a Group Discussion the most important thing is to make points. If you are not getting any idea about the topic then don’t start speaking right away because that will give a bad impression to the GTO, wait for some time, observer others, collect points from their knowledge and then make a point. Even 2 3 good points can leave a good impression.

The next test was group planning. Now this test is a basic common sense test where you have to use your common sense to tackle a few real life situations.
The main thing about this test is to maintain your temper because if you are lucky, people around you will give such amazing suggestions that you would want to bang your head on the wall :D. Just stay calm and make effective points. J
These were the 2 indoor tests. After these we were taken to the GT area for PGT (Progressive Group Task) which had a few structures/obstacles there and we had to cross it with the help of a Phatta(plank), Balli and a Rope. We were a group of 8 people.

After when the GTO explained us the rules and regulations we started the task and as it was expected we all got stuck because the more people there will be, the more suggestions they will give. At such situation, never lose your cool, observe who is giving the best solution and convince the group to go ahead with that. If you are heavy weight, don’t be a dependency on your group and give chance to fit people to complete the task. Understanding your strength and weakness is a quality of a great leader. There were 4 obstacles in PGT out of which we were able to complete 3.
After the PGT we were divided into 2 sub-groups of 4 each and the same sort of task was asked to complete which we were able to complete as we now had an idea about how the task is done. HGT was completed in around 3-4 minutes which was a great feeling.

After HGT it was command task where every individual had to act as a commander and accomplish the task told by the GTO with the help of 2 of his subordinates whom he can choose from his group. Before the command task GTO will talk to you for some time about your work, background and a little more, after then he will explain you the task and will ask you to choose the subordinates. He might ask the reason for choosing the subordinates so have it prepared.
My command task went well to. Initially I went blank but then I gathered my senses and was able to do it in time.

After the command task it was Individual obstacles. 10 obstacles will be there; GTO will give a small De’tour of the obstacles and will tell you what or what not to do, carefully listen.
After the completion of individual tasks it was time for our final task. FGT (Final Group Task). It was same like PGT, the only difference was that there was just one obstacle. We were able to complete it in a few minutes.
After all the tasks we had a whole day to spare so we decided to go out and roam around Dehradun, visited a few cafes, had good food J. At night we had a room party. Other groups also joined we played games, sang songs and had fun :D

DAY 5
Day 5 was scheduled for only conference. It sounds easy but thinking about the fact that u will be surrounded by 15-20 officers (In uniform this time) gives you quite a feeling.
Everyone was well dresses and prepared for the conference. My turn came after sometime. I entered the room, greeted everyone and sat down. They asked me a few basic questions about my stay, future plans and all and then i was asked to leave.
After when everyone got done with the conference we were taken to the same room where psych test happened. The vice president of the Board gave a short motivational lecture and then the results.
Anxiety crossed all the limits, and suddenly I heard my chest number being called. I took enough time to absorb this :p but after that it was a great feeling :D
Dehradun will always be memorable for me for what I achieved, for the fun I had, and the friends I made there. I would like to thank the SSB Vision blog and my mentor for their efforts in helping the aspirants to reach their goal.

  1. Hello sir.The article is very useful for an aspirant like me. I hv a doubt about the admission of LASIK candidates in flying branch. just assume, 'A candidate(applied for flying branch)is attending interview at AFSB. He cleared all the five days test including PABT. He going for medical test, it is found that he has done his lasik last month'. Now what would be action of the AFCME. Will they reject him permanently or Does he given some notice period for the vision test alone. If so,what will be max notice period. Please help me with an answer.
My another doubt- "Is therea conference for flying branch candidates?".
