·         Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held bilateral talks with several heads of state and ministers who have converged in Gandhinagar for the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit

5. DRUGS THAT MELTS CANCER CELLS APPROVED FOR HUMAN USE

·         A drug that could melt away cancer cells has been approved for human use in Australia, a media report said on Tuesday.

·         Developed Melbourne, venetoclax, which will be sold as venclexta, has been approved by the therapeutic goods administration for use by patients with advanced forms of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia,

·         The drug would be approved for use in US in august in 2016

9. INDIAN COAST GUARD REPATRIATES SIX FISHERMEN FROM SRI LANKA

·         The missing fishing boat, Fahima Faheda along with six Indian fishermen of Andaman and Nicobar islands was repatriated from Sri Lanka by Indian Coast Guard Ship ICGS Rani Durgavati at International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). All crew members were medically checked and are reported to be stable. 

·         According to Coast Guard authorities, after one of the crew members called his relatives on January5 from Sri Lanka, the Indian Coast Guard in coordination with Indian High Commission at Colombo planned for a repatriation and return of boat from Sri Lankan Navy

10. AIR INDIA TO RESERVE 6 SEATS FOR WOMEN ON DOMESTIC FLIGHTS

·         In a first-of-its-kind move in the aviation industry, national carrier Air India will reserve six seats for women on its flights operating on domestic routes from next week. 

·         At times, a woman travelling alone gets a middle or window seat on aircraft, which puts her to inconvenience, particularly while going to washroom. 

·         This necessitated for the airline to keep some seats reserved for them on aircraft flying on domestic routes, an Air India spokesperson said. 

11. NTPC to invest over Rs 1,000 crore in Odisha coal mine project

·         State-run power generator NTPC's board has approved an investment of over Rs 1,053 crore for the Dulanga coal mining project in Odisha with an estimated production capacity of 7 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

·         "The Board of Directors of the company has accorded investment approval for Dulanga Coal Mining Project having rated production capacity of 7 MTPA at an appraised estimated cost of Rs 1053.41 crore," NTPC said in a stock exchange filing made after close of market hours on Wednesday.

12. TAMIL NADU ASSEMBLY TO MEET ON JANUARY 23

·         Tamil Nadu Assembly will meet on January 23, marking the beginning of the first session of the year and Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao will make his first ever address to the House the same day.

·         The inaugural session, first to be held after the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa , comes after demands of main Opposition DMK to hold a special session to debate the agrarian distress in the wake of a failed monsoon.

 

13. OBAMA SURPRISES JOE BIDEN WITH TOP CIVILIAN HONOR

·         Barack Obama awarded vice president Joe Biden America's highest civilian honour on Thursday, in an emotional surprise ceremony at the White House.

·         Biden was reduced to tears as the president in his last days in office surprised him by announcing he would be awarding the 74-year-old the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

·         In remarks billed as a joint farewell to family, friends and staff before they leave the White House next week, Obama described Biden as "the finest vice-president we have ever seen" and a "lion of American history."

 

14. EX-UN CHIEF BAN KI-MOON 'PERPLEXED AND EMBARRASSED' OVER RELATIVES' BRIBERY CASE

·         Former United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon, who is expected to run for president of South Korea, said he was "perplexed and embarrassed" over bribery accusations brought by US prosecutors against his brother and nephew.

·         Ban's younger brother Ban Ki-sang and his nephew Joo Hyun Bahn were accused in a Manhattan federal court on Tuesday of a scheme to bribe a Middle Eastern official for an attempted $800 million sale of a building complex in Vietnam.

 

15. OVER 20 UK HOSPITALS DECLARE 'BLACK ALERT' AFTER BECOMING OVERCROWDED

·         More than 20 hospitals in England have declared a black alert this week after becoming so overcrowded that they could no longer guarantee patient safety and provide their full range of normal services.

·         Unprecedented numbers of patients requiring care has led to at least 23 hospital trusts declaring they cannot cope since Monday, the Guardian reported on Wednesday.

·         Struggling hospitals have been forced to take highly unusual steps in order to manage a surge in demand for care. They include cancelling cancer operations, treating adults in children's wards and even closing a birthing centre to help cope with a sudden influx of patients who need to be admitted for treatment.

16. JAPAN'S PM SHINZO ABE ARRIVES IN PHILIPPINES AS RODRIGO DUTERTE'S FIRST TOP GUEST

·         Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in the Philippines on Thursday for a two-day visit aimed at shoring up ties with its mercurial new leader, and boosting Tokyo's economic foothold in the face of anticipated competition from China.
