General Awareness Series: Updated News Jan Week 3 - Part 3

This week noticed a lot of things happening across the globe. On one hand there is a increasing gap between the rich and the poor, the rich are getting richer, while the poor are getting more poor. We need to see that there should be uniformity in wealth distribution for the nation to prosper. Current moves by the Government might help in reducing the same. Lets see the other highlights.

SUPREME COURT ALLOWS WOMAN IN HER 24TH WEEK OF PREGNANCY TO ABORT FOETUS CITING DANGER TO HER LIFE
·         The Supreme Court on Monday allowed a Mumbai-based woman, who is in her 24th week of pregnancy, to undergo termination of the foetus as it does not have a skull.
·         A bench of Justices S A Bobde and L Nageswara Rao allowed the 22-year-old woman to terminate her pregnancy while taking into consideration the report of medical board of King Edward Memorial hospital in Mumbai which suggested that the foetus would not be able to survive without the skull.

PETROL PRICE HIKED BY 42 PAISE, DIESEL BY RS 1.03

·         Following the recent spurt in oil prices to well over $50 a barrel, state-run Indian Oil Corp (IOC) hiked prices of petrol by 42 paise a litre, and of diesel by Rs 1.03, both in Delhi and effective from Monday, with corresponding increases in other states.

·         Petrol per litre now costs Rs 71.14 in Delhi, Rs 73.66 in Kolkata, Rs 77.96 in Mumbai and Rs 70.61 in Chennai.

·         Similarly, the new diesel price is Rs 59.02 in Delhi, Rs 61.27 in Kolkata, Rs 64.89 in Mumbai and Rs 60.73 in Chennai.


THOUSANDS PROTEST JALLIKATTU BAN IN MADURAI

·         Thousands of people on Monday took to the streets in Madurai's Alanganallur town in Tamil Nadu protesting a ban against Jallikattu, the ancient and popular bull-taming sport.
·         The protestors including men and women, have assembled in the town well known for conducting Jallikattu.
·         A large contingent of police personnel have been deployed at the venue to prevent any untoward incidents.In Jallikattu, a bull vaulter is expected to hang on to the bull's hump for a stipulated distance or hold on to the hump for a minimum of three jumps made by the bull.

'PILOT ERROR' REASON BEHIND THE KYRGYZSTAN CARGO PLANE CRASH
·         the crash of a turkish cargo plane in kyrgyzstan that claimed at least 37 lives on monday was caused by "pilot error," authorities in the central Asian country said.
·         the turkish boeing 747 crashed just outside the manas airport, south of the capital bishkek, on monday morning killing people in the residential area adjacent to the airport as well as those on the plane. Images from the scene showed the nose of the plane stuck inside a brick house.


YOUGUANG, WHO SIMPLIFIED CHINESE SCRIPT, DEAD

·         Zhou Youg­uang, who simplified the Chinese language by introducing Pinyin, died in Beijing on Saturday. He was 112. Pinyin is the Romanised form of Mandarin characters one of the most complicated languages of the world which makes it much easier to learn the ancient language, especially for foreigners. Chinese is the world's most spoken language, thanks to China's booming population and it’s Diaspora.


SOUTH KOREAN PROSECUTOR REQUESTS FOR ARREST WARRANT FOR SAMSUNG HEIR IN CORRUPTION PROBE

·         South Korean prosecutors on Monday requested an arrest warrant for Lee Jae-Samsung Group's de facto leader, on charges of bribery in connection with an influence-peddling scandal that led to President Park Geun-hye's impeachment.Lee, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics Co., was questioned by an independent counsel team as a bribery suspect on January 12, Yonhap News Agency reported. 


FOREIGN REGISTERED CARS IN SINGAPORE WILL HAVE TO PAY TAX

·         Singapore's Land Transport Authority(LTA) announced on Monday that all foreign-registered cars will have to pay a Reciprocal Road Charge (RRC).
·         The cars would be levied $4.48 per-entry when they enter Singapore via the Tuas or Woodlands Checkpoint, Xinhua news agency reported.
·         The new rule which took effect from January 15, was to match Malaysia's road charge implemented in November 2016.


ACCORDING TO ANALYSIS BY OXFAM 8 MEN OWNS AS MUCH WEALTH AS 3.6 BILLION PEOPLE

·         The gap between the super-rich and the poorest half of the global population is starker than previously thought, with just eight men, from Bill Gates to Michael Bloomberg, owning as much wealth as 3.6 billion people, according to an analysis by Oxfam released Monday.
·         Presenting its findings on the dawn of the annual gathering of the global political and business elites in the Swiss ski resort of Davos, anti-poverty organization Oxfam says the gap between the very rich and poor is far greater than just a year ago. It's urging leaders to do more than pay lip-service to the problem.

THREE MALAYSIAN MILITANTS KILLED IN SYRIAN AIRSTRIKE

·         Three Malaysian militants from the Islamic State (IS) terror group were killed during an airstrike in Raqqa in Syria, a media report said Monday.
·         Zainuri Kamaruddin, Ahmad Asyraf Arbee Ahmad Jamal Arbee and Sazrizal Mohd Sofian Tahyalan were killed on Friday, The Malaysian Star daily reported.

·         The latest deaths take to 30 the total number of Malaysian militants killed in Iraq and Syria
