New weapons of Indian Army

Now not only India is importing weapons and military technologies from other countries it has started giving importance to exporting as well. India’s defense export has risen from Rs 1,153 crore in FY 2013-14 to Rs 2,059 crore in FY 2015-16, Defense Minister Parrikar is aiming for $2 Billion export which faces challenges like No objection certificates for defense public sector units (DPSU) not allowed as they are not meeting the internal demands, military platforms for T90 tanks, Su30 fighters that are manufactured in India are Intellectual Property rights (IPR) of Foreign defense firms.Let’s look at the latest weapon inductees in Indian Army Armory:

  • Indigenous military platform has developed the artillery gun, “Dhanush howitzer or Advanced Towed Artillery Gun “which is included in artillery in June, 2016. Designed by Ordinance factories board effective firing range is 40 km, Rate of fire 3 rounds in 15 seconds, weight 12000 kg, equipped with thermal sight gunner display.
·      India conducted the fourth and final pre-operational test of the Agni V on December 26, 2016. Developed by DRDO operational range is from 5000 Km to 8000 Km, length 17.5 m, weight is 50, 000 Kg. This was a huge surprise for China and they gave a statement “India should not overestimate its strength.
·         Recently failed mission of subsonic cruise missile “Nirbhay” due to technical fault confirmed by DRDO officials. Therefore the project is delayed being the missile experts. It’s a long range missile with range of 1000 ~ 1500 Km, length 6m, weight of 1,500 Kgs, low cost and all weather compatible weapon.
·         The DRDO Anti-Radiation missile is a tactical, air-to-surface anti-radiation missile under development by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation. It is designed primarily to destroy enemy radars and communication facilities. With operational range from 100 to 125 Km it is expected in 2018.
·         BRAHMOS – II is a hypersonic cruise missile currently under joint venture of Russia and DRDO (Defence research and development organisation). It has operational range of 300 Km and a speed of Mach 7. It will be launched through ship, submarine, aircraft and land based mobile launchers. Its predecessor Brahmos is already in Indian arsenal.

·         PINAKA II developed by DRDL (Defence research and development Laboratory) went through successful testing in January, 2017 at Chandipur, Orissa. PINAKA is multi barrel rocket launcher with a range of 7 to 60 Km and of 5.20 m. It is launched through platform of TATRA trucks, two rocket pods per launcher, with a total of 12 rockets. Total weight of 276 Kg. Its predecessor PINAKA – I has already fought in Kargil war, where it was successful in neutralising enemy positions on the mountain tops. It has since been inducted into the Indian Army in large numbers.
