Ceasefire Violations at LOC: An ulterior motive

The ceasefire violations by the Pakistani Army at the Line of Control has been a major issue since 2014 and it is still continuing till date. These are also known as the Indo-Pakistan border skirmishes 2014-2015 by international agencies, like United Nations. But, it has been seen that most of the times these skirmishes have been initiated by Pakistani Army at strategic moments which would have potentially changed the relation between the two countries, especially when there is a chance of betterment in terms of the strained relations between the two nations.

As a matter of fact, approximately 32 Indian soldiers and BSF personnel have been killed in these ceasefire violations initiated by the Pakistani Army in this period of 2014-15 itself, although the ceasefire violations have been in play since a long period of time. But they were less frequent than how it is in the current situation. In mid-2014, the then-defence minister Arun Jaitley made a public statement saying that Pakistan should stop these violations to peace and adventurisms at the border, the costs of which would be unaffordable. To this, the defence minister of Pakistan, Khawaja Asif replied with a veiled threat to the usage of nuclear weapons. His comment stated that the border tensions should not lead to more problems between two nuclear powered neighbours. Now, comments as such show that the Pakistan government is not in a mood for bilateral talks on the issue of Kashmir.

The rigidity of the Pakistan government on the subject of Kashmir is one reason that this issue has been on the rise since the last year. The Pakistani attitude towards the full occupation of Kashmir and the demotivation towards bilateral peace talks form the root cause of such violations. Every time we have extended a hand of friendship, we have been met with a hostile attitude from the Pakistani armed forces. This was clearly seen during the ceasefire violations which started happening during the Vajpayee-Musharraf peace talks. This happens due to an inbred ego among the Pakistani armed forces and Inter-Services Intelligence of Pakistan, who view the peace talks as a submission to the Indian government and fail to see the bigger picture that the harmony between India and Pakistan skyrockets South Asia in the terms of trade and commerce beyond imagination. This is to some extents driven by the bad memories and the humiliating experiences of the loss in the previous wars with India that they have had. Although Nawaz Sharif government gives a promising view towards the Indo-Pak relations, but the sad state of the matter is that the biggest enemies towards harmony between the two nations is the Pakistani armed forces and ISI.

Now, there is a discussion on why the UN or US Armed Forces are not interfering to help with this situation. Firstly, a UN interference may worsen the situation as the Pakistan government is at an adamant standpoint about having a right over the whole of ‘Azad Kashmir’ and will not settle for anything other than that. This rigid approach is not at all healthy for bilateral peace talks. The Pakistani politicians are of the opinion that the Modi government is trying to incite war. The US Armed forces are not getting involved because they do not find any incentive to get involved in this issue. This causes a Mexican stand-off kind of a situation.

Why are our armed forces not putting an end to this ceasefire violation issue which is clearly happening with an ulterior motive of the complete occupation of Kashmir, the brainwash of the Kashmiri residents and the incitement of politico-terrorist organisations, with a swift and adequate response operation? The answer is that this is not the root cause of the problem. The operation may kill a number of soldiers who are currently violating this ceasefire and send a message to Pakistan. But the truth is that the soldiers who die can be replaced, but the masterminds behind these violations, who are heading the organisations inciting such planned violence, such as ISI are safely placed far away from the border. Hence, the solution cannot be achieved without a paradigm change in the mind-set of these people. So, the democratically elected and accountable government of Pakistan should take a strong stand on this issue and join hand-in-hand with our government to achieve a peaceful and viable solution to this age-long problem.
