SSB Lecturette Series: All you need to know about Clean India Campaign

Let’s talk about Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which English version is CLEAN INDIA CAMPAIGN. First of all, it is necessary to know the root cause of the arrival of original idea. Our National Father Mahatma Gandhi communicated a pre-eminent message to the nation through his efforts to aware people about cleanliness. He dreamed to see India as "Clean India" where we together initiate to clean up India.

In keeping with this vision, our Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched this campaign on 2 October 2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi which covers all the backward statutory towns, to clean the streets, roads, offices and whole country. This is the biggest cleanliness drive in which all government employees, some celebrities, school and college students of India participated for successful implementation of this mission. This campaign aims to accomplish the goal of Clean India in next five years i.e. 2 October 2019 so that the 150th birth anniversary of Bapu can be celebrated as an accomplishment of this responsibility.

Clean India Campaign is not just about cleaning streets & roads but also a step towards plantation, healthy and trash-free environment, providing sanitation facilities, construction of latrines which are causeway for this great effort. This is also worldwide field upgrading in tourism to present India as an ideal destination for tourists. Because squalid and dirty aspect of the country is an embarrassing moment for Indians and is also hamper the development of country. So, this is the right time and opportunity to take part towards Swachh Bharat. This campaign will also help to adopt good habits.

India is undergoing a rapid and unplanned transformation which cause many type of environmental problems. So, this is a vast initiative by PM Modi towards CLEAN INDIA. But in reality it's so hard to say how much it will be successful in present perspective. For this its accurate execution is very important. Because if we look behind, there have been so many attempts by previous governments but all in vain. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is not purely a new programme. In 1986, government launched a scheme as the Central Rural Sanitation Programme which later became the Total Sanitation Campaign in 1999 and after that Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan in 2012. Now, we all know about this re-launched program “Clean India Campaign” in 2014. All previous plans were not successful because there has been a well-known problem of corruption in appropriate approach of given task. They all have the same mission and target to make country as Clean India. But lack of determination and devotion caused failure. So, it is not fully ensured that the clean India campaign will achieve its goal.

If you want change, first change yourself.”  Ever observe minutely in the trash along with railway tracks. You must find Plastic glasses, plates, spoons, lots of cups of tea, wrappers, biscuits covers etc. We always carry these stuffs along with us while travelling. We preach to the world about cleanliness and we carry filthiness with us. Any slogan will not change us. Sanitation Campaign posters are hanging on the walls of the railway and in the same time trash is scattered here and there. Before sanitation campaign slogans stick on the walls like fossil, there is a need to look inside seriously and understand this fact that from where the garbage comes. We are the sources who create garbage. There is no planning for right disposal of trash.

Overall, we can say “CLEAN INDIA CAMPAIGN” will be a great achievement for India as well as for the present government, if it will be executed in effective manner. In this campaign, every citizen has to contribute his 100 hours per year for the cleanliness in India which is sufficient to make this country a clean country by 2019. Success of this initiative is not only the responsibility of the government but also every sincere citizen of India. If we really want sacredness in our life as well as in our country, we must adopt the cleanliness habits.
